UPDATE:  This will now be a hands on workshop instead of a demo, so make note of the camera equipment you should bring!  We will need to limit this workshop to 14 people, so if we have more than that, I will email letting you know you are on the waitlist.  Lastly, if you register and cannot not attend, please let me know so that someone can take your spot.

Please join us for the March User group on Oil & Water photography

NOTE: If you arrive and no one is there to let you in, please call me at 410-598-0491.

This is an interesting technique that is a really fun exercise in abstract photography, perfect during these cold months!

Overview: Oil & Water photography is the effect oil droplets have when placed on a bed of water and the effects you can create with your camera.

What you will learn:  You will learn what setup, materials, and techniques are required to make some amazing and fun images!

    What to bring:

    • Camera
    • A macro lens if you have one.  If you don't have one, bring a lens that is around 70mm - 100mm, so 24-105mm and 70-200mm lenses will work.  It just needs to be able to focus closely.

    • Remote cable release (optional) -  Not required, but a nice to have
    • LED light panel (optional) - If you have one, please bring it.

    • Hillwood Estate, 4155 Linnean Avenue, NW Washington, DC

Our first spring outing will be to the Hillwood Estate in Washington DC, the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post (of Grape Nuts and Merriweather Pavilion fame!). The site has a large mansion house with opulent interiors for touring, 25 acres of formal gardens, an orchid house (which  will be in bloom) and a café for informal light dining. Details about the venue are available at: https://hillwoodmuseum.org/

We are planning to visit on March 25. Mike and I will be at the ticket counter at 10:30am for those who would like to meet up. Free Parking is available on site and guests are invited. Tickets are required for entrance to the house and gardens and are available online and at the venue (online tickets are discounted - $15 for adults and $13 for seniors). It is not clear whether docents will be available on that day for guided tours, but Hillwood does offer an app that provides guided tours thorough your phone.

We anticipate that attendees will tour at their own pace and will visit the café if they desire.  The estate closes at 5:00 pm. Note that handheld photography is allowed in the house (no tripods, monopods, or flash). Tripods are allowed in the gardens outside.

Please join us for the April User group fieldtrip on Intentional Camera Movement Photography

NOTE 1: We will be meeting at Centennial Park rt 108 entrance.  We will meet by the boat launch.  If you cannot find us, please call me at 410-598-0491.

NOTE 2: We are meeting at 6:00 instead of our normal 7:00 time to take advantage of more daylight.

This is something different, using camera movement to turn normal photographs into something really unique.

Overview: Andrew Gray is one of the pioneers in this area, and he describes it as "A distinctive style of photography that goes beyond the ordinary! Inspired by the old English masters' paintings, It combines camera techniques and post-processing to create painterly impressionist images. These stunning visuals showcase both recognizable and abstract scenes, resulting in a style that transcends traditional photography"

What you will learn:  You will learn what camera settings and techniques to use to create unique images!

    What to bring:

    • Camera
    • Really, any lens can work, so I would bring a wider angle lens and perhaps a mid telephoto.

We hope you will join us!
