The Photography Collections at UMBC

The Photography Collections at UMBC began in 1974 with the purchase of over 5,400 photographs by documentarian Lewis Hine. Today, the collection includes over 7 million photographic items including negatives, contact sheets, prints, and equipment. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the history of the Photography Collections at UMBC and some of the collection's highlights. It will also explore the current exhibition at the AOK Gallery, Lewis Hine in Maryland and provide an overview of the groundbreaking photographs that helped to change child labor laws in the United States.

Beth Saunders is Associate Director and Curator of Special Collections and Gallery at the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery, University of Maryland Baltimore County. A specialist in the history of photography, she holds a PhD and MPhil in Art History from The CUNY Graduate Center and a BFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Beth previously held positions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Sotheby’s, New York and has taught at Baruch College, Rhode Island College, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Her book Developing Italy: Nationalism and Networks of Early Photography is under contract with Brill.

An outing to visit the gallery will be announced at a later date.

The meeting will be at The Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant, 9100 Fathers Legacy, Ellicott City, MD 21042 Learning Center, Terrace Level. Click here for a map:
